Healthy Eating is Affordable and Quick

The large food manufacturers and fast food companies have done a great job convincing people that eating healthy is expensive and time consuming. Nothing could be further from the truth. Creating healthy meals at home can be quick, easy, and less expensive than eating out. Generally speaking, if you eat the typical American diet you will eventually need the typical prescriptions or over the counter drugs to address western diseases caused by the western diet. (continue reading)

My Diet for the New Year

Happy New Year and here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2016. Although I consider myself a healthy eater, as I reflect on the last year I think there’s room for improvement within my diet. The average American consumes 60% of their calories from processed food, 150 pounds of sugar, and 150 pounds of flour which is basically sugar every year. These are some pretty staggering figures and are directly correlated to the state of health in this country. Although most of my diet is real and whole food a very small percentage of my diet comes from sugar, flour, and unhealthy oils like soy, corn, sunflower, canola, and safflower . I plan on completely eliminating these from my diet this year. (continue reading)

Benefits of Eating Real Food & Avoiding Junk Food

Hippocrates (460 c. 370 BC) was a Greek physician who said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. This site is dedicated to that simple yet powerful statement. Our modern food supply of genetically modified organisms, pesticide laden crops, over processed food like substances is simply as far as one can get from that statement. Our food supply has been hijacked by chemical companies who produce highly addictive “food” full of chemicals, additives, preservatives, artificial flavoring and sweeteners. They have managed to remove the most important parts of the food, the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals. This is not food but a slow poison which will bankrupt our society. What’s worse is that our government subsidizes these companies by paying them to grow the corn and soy that goes into these processed foods. Yes, we are paying for them to poison us and our children. This is not the type of soy or corn that is edible but that has been genetically altered to be used in processed food. If a foreign government was doing this to us we would invade them but we somehow allow these corporations to do these things. Its bad enough to do this to adults but its simply immoral to advertise this crap to our children who are starting to develop adult diseases in elementary school. Many studies have come out stating that this will be the first generation of children that will live shorter lives than their parents. That makes me angry and sad. (continue reading)

Gut Health

Microbiome or gut health is essential to both our physical and mental health. It’s our connection to the outside world and how we absorb or in some cases don’t absorb our nutrition. Disruption to the microbiome can lead to a variety of health conditions including  allergies, depression, anxiety, autism, adhd, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, dementia, and more.

Seventy percent of our immune cells can be found in the gut. Most of our serotonin (feel good neurotransmitter) is found in the gut, which is why the gut is often referred to as the second brain. Mental health professionals need to start looking at the gut when assessing a patients psychiatric profile.  There are hundreds of studies linking anxiety, depression, adhd, and autism to gluten consumption. With prescriptions being written for adults and children at sky rocketing rates, we need to find the root cause of these problems. Addressing gut issues rather than masking symptoms with drugs seems much more logical a solution. (read more)
