Benefits of Eating Real Food & Avoiding Junk Food

Hippocrates (460 ­ c. 370 BC) was a Greek physician who said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. This site is dedicated to that simple yet powerful statement. Our modern food supply of genetically modified organisms, pesticide laden crops, over processed food like substances is simply as far as one can get from that statement. Our food supply has been hijacked by chemical companies who produce highly addictive “food” full of chemicals, additives, preservatives, artificial flavoring and sweeteners. They have managed to remove the most important parts of the food, the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytochemicals. This is not food but a slow poison which will bankrupt our society. What’s worse is that our government subsidizes these companies by paying them to grow the corn and soy that goes into these processed foods. Yes, we are paying for them to poison us and our children. This is not the type of soy or corn that is edible but that has been genetically altered to be used in processed food. If a foreign government was doing this to us we would invade them but we somehow allow these corporations to do these things. Its bad enough to do this to adults but its simply immoral to advertise this crap to our children who are starting to develop adult diseases in elementary school. Many studies have come out stating that this will be the first generation of children that will live shorter lives than their parents. That makes me angry and sad.

So what is the modern western medical solution for this? Drugs and procedures which in most cases treat the symptoms and not the underlying cause of the problem. If you had a giant tack in your foot would you simply keep taking pain killers to get rid of the pain? Of course not you would take the tack out. So why is the sick care solution in this country to simply mask the symptoms rather than treating the cause of the issue? These drugs at best will only offer some people a little relief and at worst will have major side effects. 80% of the US population is on at least one prescription drug and many are taking multiple drugs. That’s a staggering number. Eating unhealthy foods then taking toxic drugs will never lead to good health.

In many cases eating a mostly or 100% plant based diet out performs most drugs even for major diseases. Take heart disease, our number one killer. Drugs and procedures can only manage the symptoms but as Dr. Dean Ornish and others have documented for the last 30 years, not only can a plant based diet stop the progression of the disease but in most cases reverse it. There’s no pill that can do that. Healthy food is simply the best and cheapest medicine or the wrong food is a slow poison. There are countless studies showing how amazing plants are at healing the body. The body is designed to heal itself as long as it has all the necessary nutrients but it will never heal with processed “food”. Food is not just calories, its information that contains instructions that are carried to our
genes, hormones, immune system, micro-biome, and other parts of the body. Health results from the quality of the information we put into our bodies. Organic foods have more information since they’ve evolved over thousands of years. Genetically engineered food doesn’t carry the same information since they are new foods that have been altered.

According the the US Department of Agriculture “Researchers found that on average, Americans ate 1.5 cups of vegetables daily, about 50-60 percent of the 2-3 cups recommended for adults and older children. More than half of vegetable intake came from potatoes and tomatoes (51 percent), whereas only 10 percent came from dark green and orange vegetables.” Basically
most people’s vegetable intake is from french fries, potato chips, and the tomato sauce on pizza. The average American can’t even meet the already low standard of the USDA for the amount of fruits and vegetables needed for good health. Whats worse is that not enough green leafy vegetables are being eaten. They are one of the most important groups of vegetables because of their high level of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals which protect us from many disease and can even reverse many of the top diseases plaguing this country.

We need to stop subsidies to big agriculture which produces food that is making people sick and start subsidizing local organic farmers. Every day you vote with your fork and support the food industry. You have the power to support companies that care about the food they produce in a responsible manner. As I write this Mcdonalds has announced they will be closing 700 stores and Chipolte has announced they are GMO free. Change is slow but it is coming and companies only hear you when their profits are down.

Change is not always easy as the processed food is very addictive so do your best and slowly increase the amount of plants in your diet. As you
begin to increase the amount of plants in your diet the amount of processed food will naturally go down. As you reduce the unhealthy foods your taste buds will change and you will slowly decrease your cravings for sugar, fat, and salt. The junk food is designed and formulated to get people hooked on sugar, fat, and salt. Sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine. Scientist have studied the MRI¹s of people on cocaine and sugar and the brain scans light up in a very similar manner. Sugar is a drug and is highly addictive. The average american eats 1/2 a pound of sugar and 1/2 pound of flour per day. flour is basically sugar as it instantly turns to glucose once consumed.

Nutrition is simply absent from our healthcare system as doctors are not taught how to use food as medicine. They go to medical school to learn about medicine. There¹s no money in food but drugs have patents and large advertising budgets. Take back your health. Empower yourself with good organic produce and real food. Its better for you and the planet. 100 years ago there was no organic, local, sustainable, etc they just called it food. Since the food industry doesn’t care about health and the healthcare industry doesn’t care about food its up to you to care about
yourself.

Some of you may choose to to eat animal products which I think is a personal choice. Michael Pollan said it best “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” This site will not be a vegan or vegetarian site but a site about the benefits of eating more plants. One of the few things everyone in nutrition agrees on. There will be articles on sustainability raised pastured animals and wild seafood which are much healthier options than industrial meats and farm raised fish. I personally on occasion do eat wild fish or pastured animals but the majority of my diet is made up of plants, legumes, nuts, seeds, and limited intact whole grains.

For as long as I can remember I have been passionate about food and the power it has. I have personally have seen the power of food in my own life and hope you will also see it in yours. I plan on developing the site and writing articles to show you the power food has and I hope you will find the information valuable.
